University Students & Young Adults

University life and early adulthood can bring considerable change. Leaving home, starting university, living independently, forming relationships and making decisions about the future can be exciting, but can also bring anxiety, loneliness, uncertainty or a sense of not quite belonging.

I work with university students, young adults and young professionals experiencing anxiety, low mood, difficulties with relationships or self-esteem, questions around identity and belonging, and uncertainty about the future. This can include the pressures of academic workload, expectations and the transition from school to university and into adulthood. I also work with those in demanding or high-performance environments, where perfectionism, pressure to succeed and the difficulty of sustaining competing demands can contribute to anxiety, exhaustion or burnout.

Leaving home and finding your place

Moving away from home, beginning university or studying abroad can bring questions about independence and belonging to the foreground. For some, difficulties emerge for the first time during this transition. For others, familiar anxieties or ways of coping become harder to manage without the structures and relationships that previously supported them.

Therapy can offer a place to think about what this period of change means personally, including the sometimes conflicting wishes to become more independent while still needing connection, reassurance and a sense of home.

Identity, relationships and uncertainty

Early adulthood can also bring questions about who you are, how you relate to others and what kind of life you want to build. Relationships, sexuality, difference, neurodivergence, family expectations and experiences of belonging or exclusion may all become important.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy offers a space to think not only about what is happening now, but about patterns and experiences that may be shaping how current difficulties are understood and experienced.

I offer psychotherapy in Central London and online. Online work can be particularly helpful for students studying away from home, including those studying abroad, or whose location changes between university and holidays.
